1973 Kitchen & Family Room Remodel

The Owners, who had the home architecturally designed and built in 1973, decided it was time to update the original Kitchen and Family Room. Upper and lower cabinets that separated the Kitchen from the Family Room were removed. A wall that enclosed the south side of the Kitchen and created a Hallway beyond was removed. The Kitchen area was increased from 13 x12.5 Feet to 13 x 19.5 feet and opened up completely to the adjacent Family Room.

An island was added to the Kitchen configuration that supports a 36 inch gas cook top with a downdraft exhaust fan that utilizes an inline fan to reduce noise in the Kitchen. The island also supports a warming drawer, spice drawers, regular storage drawers and a bank of 36 x 30 x 6 inch high drawers that each hold place settings of china to serve 12.

To conceal a new steel column a full height 30 inch wide shelf unit was incorporated into one corner of the island to hold cook books. The Owners wanted a deep French door refrigerator, which was accommodated with 30 inch deep cabinets to minimize its protrusion beyond the surrounding cabinets.

All the shelves in the full-height pantry adjacent to the refrigerator are on pullout glides. The 5 sixteen inch wide full height panels that flank the double wall oven pull out 33 inches  to expose 7 shelves that are each 14 inches deep.

The counter tops and full height backsplash are sand colored quartz. The wood on all the Kitchen and Family Room casework as well as the new doors on the Hall Closet is all quarter sawn white oak which was used throughout the home. The oak floor in the Kitchen and Family Room has been laid over an in-floor radiant heat system.

The Family Room accommodates a large flat screen TV. The casework conceals the electronic components for the TV as well as the music sound system. The lower cabinet adjacent to the desk in the Breakfast Area conceals a printer, fax, scanner and copy machine on a pull out drawer for easy access while sitting at the desk. Careful attention was given to the light fixture selection and placement to illuminate walls, shelves, work surfaces and the beautiful oak casework throughout the two rooms.
